how to draw a tulip tree
Let's learn how to draw a tulip. Tulips are bright and beautiful flowers. They make us think of Spring and all the pretty colors that we see at that time of the year. I'll show you my method for how to draw a tulip in just a few easy steps.
I'll show you how to draw this tulip with a graphic tablet but you can also use these instructions if you want to draw it with a pencil and a sheet of paper.
First, we'll go over the step by step instructions to draw the tulip then we'll color it.
Don't have time to make the drawing right now? Feel free to pin this blog post to your favorite drawing board on Pinterest. You can click on the button below to pin it now so that you can draw it later.
You can also print the instructions and watch the video below.
This is a good beginner drawing project because the steps are easy enough for anyone to follow. I've made it even easier by adding a printable instruction sheet below.
If you like making crafts, you can save your drawing as a cut file and upload it to a cutting machine like Cricut or Silhouette.
I get commissions for purchases made through some of the links in this post. There is no extra cost to you. See my full disclosure here.
Do you want to learn how to make more digital drawings? Then you'll love my So Simple SVG course. In the So Simple SVG video course, you'll learn
- how to use a graphic design program,
- how to find shortcuts for the menu,
- how to draw using basic shapes.
By the end of the course, you'll know how to take your digital drawings and transfer them to your cutting machine so that you can make t-shirts with htv, mugs, and tumblers.
How to Draw an Easy Tulip
Of course, you'll need some art supplies to draw the tulip. Below you'll find a short list of supplies for two options whether you want to make a digital drawing or a paper drawing.
You may already have some of these items. If not, you can easily order them online from Amazon or Etsy. I have included some links below to shops on both of these marketplaces.
Drawing Supplies
Digital Drawing Supplies
- Graphic tablet (I use this one from Amazon (optional))
- Computer
- Inkscape software program
Paper Drawing Supplies
- Drawing pencil
- Art markers
- Colored Pencils
My favorite graphic design software to use is Inkscape. It's easy to download, it's free to use and there is even an online svg drawing app version of it that you can get for free.
I like to use the calligraphy and brush strokes tool when I'm drawing in Inkscape. Even though it's technically for calligraphy writing, I have modified it so that it can be used as a drawing tool.
The settings that I use are in the instruction sheet at the bottom of the post.
If you're making the digital version, open the calligraphy tool menu and change the settings to match mine before you start drawing.
Draw a Tulip Step by Step
Start by drawing a "U" shape.
Remember, if you get stuck, you can print the instruction sheet below to help you draw.
There is also an easy step by step video that you can watch at the end of this post. All in all, the drawing tutorial takes less than 5 minutes.
Draw Tulip Petals
After you've drawn the "U" shape, the base of the tulip is complete. Let's add the petals
Draw a line from the top left of the U shape down to the middle of the "U".
Now draw a line from the top right down to the middle.
It's ok if the lines are not perfectly straight. In fact, it's better if the lines are not completely straight because that's how things are in nature.
Draw a Tulip Stem
To make the stem of the tulip, draw two vertical lines under the head (the part where all the petals meet).
Draw Tulip Leaves
The next step is to draw the leaves. If you're wondering how many leaves does a tulip have and how many should you draw, the answer is, typically between two to six leaves.
You can choose to draw as many as you like. For this tutorial, I'll draw two leaves.
We'll start with a curved line from the bottom left side of the stem.
Draw the curve out and then into a point, then draw the curve back down to the starting point.
Repeat this step on the right side of the stem.
The tulip drawing outline is complete and you can move on to coloring the outline.
Coloring the Tulip
You're ready to color your drawing of the tulip. If you prefer, you can leave it blank, and print your drawing as a coloring page.
Are you thinking about using this drawing to make a tulip svg? If so, then, you will want to color it to get the best results.
If you don't color it, you will end up with an outline instead of a filled-in tulip.
To color the tulip, use the fill bucket tool (fill bounded areas tool).
Make sure that your areas are bounded (that means that they are closed with no gaps).
If you have gaps, double click on the gap, zoom in and pull the nodes to close the gap. Watch the video to see how I did this.
Click the fill bucket tool and then click on a color from the color menu bar at the bottom of the screen. Next, click on a section of the tulip to fill it with color.
Repeat this process to color in every section of the tulip.
Your easy tulip drawing is done. All it took was just a few simple steps!
Tulips placed together with other flowers make a lovely bouquet. You can also draw a red rose by following my tutorial on how to draw a rose and adding it to your tulip.
If you liked this lesson, you'll love my So Simple SVG Files course. I will walk you through the steps to make digital drawings using simple shapes in Inkscape.
In the course, you'll also learn how to transfer your drawings to your cutting machine. Once you upload them to your cutting machine, you can use them to make craft projects.
Now that you know how to draw a tulip, check out these ideas for simple craft projects that you can make with it.
Crafts to Make with Tulips
The nice thing about digital drawings is that they can be easily transformed into physical printed designs for lots of craft projects.
Here are some crafts that you can make with your tulip drawing:
- Felt nurse badge clip
- Tulip door hanger
- Tulip zipper charm

If you have a Silhouette or a Cricut machine and a heat press, it will make it even easier to cut out. Imagine all of the crafts that you can make with the tulip drawing.
Like I mentioned before, when you save the drawing as a cut file, you'll be able to put it on t-shirts, glasses, cups and other craft blank items.
Since you like drawing, I'm guessing that you may also like making crafts and want to turn it into more than just a hobby. Find out how you can do that in my post about craft businesses to make money from home.
